Does this sound familiar?
You’re active, going to the gym, and you feel great… Then life happens.
Maybe you had kids, changed jobs, moved to a new city, or had to care for an elderly parent. For
whatever reason, workouts slowed down and then stopped altogether. Years passed.
What did you realize after some time? You didn’t feel great. You lacked energy. You didn’t feel strong
or mobile in ways you used to. Your body was letting you know that you needed to move again. You
needed to incorporate fitness back into your life.
Many people think that we get weaker as we get older, and there’s nothing to be done about it. And
while it’s true that we all experience some physical decline as we age, it’s also a fact that strength can
be improved at any age. With continued training, you can hold much of your strength into very late in
life.
Even if you’re currently inactive, if you start training now you will get stronger. It doesn’t matter how old
you are, you can start a road to fitness today!
If this all sounds familiar to you personally, (or relevant to someone you know), we are here to help
you get started on the road back to being fit.
Our Recommendation: Start Slowly and Build Momentum
If you’ve worked out before, but aren’t active right now, here’s some great news: Your body hasn’t
forgotten everything.
Yes, you’ll have to put in some work to get back to where you were, but you aren’t starting from zero.
Your body remembers the things it used to do, even if your muscles and lungs have a few “cobwebs.”
You’re going to have to relearn some things, but it won’t take long to recover your old movement
patterns. As you get moving, you’ll start to build strength and stamina again. Things will get easier
even if you feel rusty at the start.
With that in mind, the best plan is to start slowly while you gain momentum, without feeling stuck on
where you used to be. Let’s say you could once do 15 sit-ups or push-ups in a row. We’ll bet that
number is out of reach when you restart a program, (and that’s okay and expected). Don’t overdo it,
starting hard – you will only get discouraged. Do what you can, knowing you’re going to build on this
over time.
We suggest you set goals and focus your mind on progress, finding small victories in each workout. If
you track your exercise on your Right Fit tracking sheet or our app, you will see your progression!
Start with a very easy workout that just gets you moving and sweating. Keep it short and use light
loads.
If you’re just a little sore the next day, you did the right amount, and that’s normal. Gradually increasing
volume, loading and intensity over the next days, weeks and months will set you up for success.
