Are Healthy Habits Enough?

Meal plans, supplements, fat-burning workout programs, cleanses, macro tracking, omitting all sugar, fasting, the keto diet…. Where do you even start if you want to lose weight?!

Here’s the truth: The world of nutrition can be very confusing, and there are lots of too-good-to-be-true promises, and outright lies. It’s no wonder many people struggle with weight loss.

But I have great news for you: Simple healthy habits are enough to help you move toward your weight loss goals.

In fact, you can take some simple steps today and you’ll be on the right track. Here are two you can start right now if you want to lose weight. If it all seems “too easy,” remember, simple habits are sustainable habits and sustainable habits produce long-term progress.

Healthy Habit #1: Get Moving

You know all those workout programs you see advertised online? Ignore them. You don’t need to complicate things if you’re just starting out. Instead, just get moving – get up from your desk to stretch, go for a walk, or take the stairs.

If you’re already moving every day, increase the amount a little bit. Movement will help you burn calories and get your metabolism going. Increasing daily steps is a great way to start, remember, a little + a little = a lot.

Here are a few ideas to add more movement to your day:

  • Go for a walk around your neighbourhood, or at the waterfront.
  • Spend some time doing yard work or tackling a project that requires movement.
  • Play a sport with a child or grandchild. Or, just hit Riverside Park with the kids!
  • Pick up a ball, racket or club. To check out all the recreational activities available to us in town, visit Belleville’s Programs and Schedules Page: Programs and Schedules | City of Belleville
  • Get on a bike or into a canoe or kayak.
  • Use the stairs if you have the option.

Just try to do something every day. You could even track this in a simple journal, not only for some accountability, but also to see your progress.

The next step? You might add some strength workouts to your routine – maybe two or three times a week in addition to your daily movement.

And this is where we can help! At Right Fit, we want you to be your best self, which includes building your strength and mobility, as well as easing your aches and pains.

This summer is the perfect time to start prioritizing your health, including incorporating fitness into your life. We offer initial individual consultations to every new member – it’s a chance to get to know each other, you can tour the gym, ask any questions you have, and share with us your worries and goals. Healthy Habit #2: Focus on Vegetables and Lean Protein

Improving your diet doesn’t have to be complicated – it can actually be very simple. Most people eat too many carbs and too much bad fat. Many popular foods combine the two and make it very tough not to overeat. Of course, sometimes you definitely should indulge in a treat. But to accomplish your weight-loss goals, here are a few simple but very effective strategies.

healthy habits

First, fill half your plate with veggies at every meal. Vegetables are packed with vitamins, nutrients and fibre and they don’t provide huge amounts of calories. They’re nutritious and filling and they can be delicious too!

Second, focus on lean protein. We’re talking chicken breasts, turkey cold cuts, and fish. Rib-eye steaks, hamburgers and deep-fried chicken wings won’t fit well with this plan. There are also many other options if you’d prefer not to eat meat.

Protein will help you fuel your body and build muscle, and lean protein choices will ensure you don’t take in a lot of calories from fat.

Again, you can track your “win streaks” in a journal. Your body will love what you’re putting into it and you’ll feel the difference.
