Fill out the form to get started
It’s almost summer! We’re tidying up our gardens and the deck is all set up. We’re pulling out our shorts
and sleeveless tops. We’re eyeing those bathing suits that we haven’t worn in a year…
It’s no surprise that we’re also considering how we’re going to look and feel in that swimsuit!
There’s nothing wrong with wanting to look good and feel confident in our bodies.
It’s great to set healthy goals so that we feel good about our appearance when we’re on that upcoming
beach trip with the family, but remembering that weight loss and the gym don’t go hand in hand is key.
Of course, transformations don’t happen overnight, so it’s important to think about your goals, both in the
long term and the short term. As you work towards your big goal, you can stay motivated and gain
confidence as you progress through your micro wins!

Here are some ways to think about goal setting for strength, losing weight, gaining energy, and feeling your
best this summer:
Strength Goals
Adding lean muscle will have us looking and feeling better. Strength training and eating the right foods will
get you there in time. But, even if your long-term goal is gaining noticeable muscle, you can still improve
your strength in the meantime.
As you learn to lift, your brain makes better connections to the muscle that’s already there. That means you
can often lift heavier loads, quite progressively, with each session.
When you start a strength program, it’s a lot of fun to watch the numbers climb. A person might squat with
body weight in Week 1, an empty barbell in Week 2 and a loaded barbell in Week 3! As your strength
increases, you will feel better and better.
So, although you may not see obvious physical changes right away, be proud of the wins you’re making
every day. When you track your progression, you’ll have a lot to celebrate as you realize that you are
getting stronger, and that will keep you smiling as you work towards your big goal.
Weight Loss Goals
Losing body fat also takes time. In a good training program, a person will gradually improve body
composition over weeks and months IF they also work on changing their diet. Usually this means increasing protein and fiber and decreasing sugar! As we’ve said before, “quick fixes” don’t work. A steady approach is
the right way to go.
Again, it’s important to set smaller goals so you don’t feel discouraged as you work towards your big, long
term goal.

Workout streaks are a great way to set yourself up for these wins. Even if your goal is to lose some weight,
you can set other goals too, such as “work out three times a week,” “never miss my Monday class” or “walk
around the neighbourhood every day.”
You can write these goals down and log your progress. Then you can look back on your wins and feel great
about it.
Consistently showing up for yourself in these ways also works towards your big goal much more effectively
than sporadic training.
Feeling Your Best
I doubt it comes as any surprise that many people who build good exercise habits report increased energy,
better sleep, improved confidence and more happiness.
You might want to lose 6 lbs and have toned shoulders as a long term goal, but no one complains about a
good night’s sleep or an increased sense of self-worth earned through consistently working out.
It’s hard to quantify feelings, but I’d encourage you to log all the changes you see and feel. Whenever you
notice any changes as a result of working out, write them down in your logbook: “Slept 9 hours without
waking up,” “Ran upstairs at work without getting winded,” or, “Played tag with the grand-kids at the park
without feeling sore.”
These are wins! These are the things to be proud of!
